Pioneering Gone Well at Highland Capital Management

The founders of Highland Capital Management, James Dondero and Mark Okada, have created a company which has evolved on several different levels over the last few decades. Although the early years were full of alterations to the company, in 1998 after building and acquiring a few smaller companies, the name was changed to Highland Capital and the rest is history.

In 2000 Highland Capital established an alternate investment 40 Act platform and launched its first commingled bank loan fund. Expansion of the company continued and in 2004 Highland acquired two floating rate funds from Columbia Asset Management, thus officially entering the mutual funds business. Highland Capital Management was one of the earliest pioneers delving into the CLO market, including Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) and CLO investing. The term CLO references an issuance of securities which may offer AAA to B ratings plus an equity tranche affirmed by cash flows derived from a diversified pool of senior structured corporate bank loans. The manner in which a CLO is structured allows for a reinvestment period where the CLO manager can buy and sell assets over a 3-5 year period. The managers, of course, utilize a rigorous structure for selecting the investments based on highly analyzed qualitative and quantitative methods.
